Carmakers in Japan will have to report defects as soon as they crop up

The transport ministry of Japan plans to require that carmakers report product flaws as they are discovered instead of every three months and post the information in the Internet prior to recalls, according to ministry officials.

The aim is to enhance motorists’ awareness of the need to ensure the safety of their vehicles and to reduce the number of traffic accidents. The ministry toughened regulations on the recall system after Mitsubishi Motors Corp. was found in 2000 to have covered up product recalls, which were carried out in response to consumer complaints about faulty vehicles.

The planned system will seek to disclose much more information about defective cars to the public than is currently available.

The ministry is aiming to institute the new enhanced regulation by around the summer, requiring carmakers to report as soon as possible in the event of deaths of serious injuries involving their products.
