Hino Motors, Ltd. to provide shuttle buses for the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit

Hino Motors, Ltd. (“Hino”) will provide the following vehicles as shuttle buses for the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit that will be held in July 2008: two different versions of a large-sized hybrid touring coach called the “Hino S’elega Hybrid” and a single hybrid bus equipped with Inductive Power Transfer1.

The G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit has been dubbed the “Environment Summit” and environmental concerns are planned to be a major focus. Hino recognizes the importance of such an intention so has decided to provide shuttle buses for the summit. Hino will continue to work to actively prevent global warming and provide trucks and buses that are useful for our customers.

Outline of the new “Hino S’elega Hybrid”

The “Hino S’elega Hybrid” is a large-sized high-output hybrid touring coach that is designed to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. The new model introduces an “A09C-1M” type power unit with a total piston displacement of 8.9 L. This is a combination of a new lightweight, high-output engine and Hino’s special hybrid system2. With this power unit, the new model has succeeded in reducing emission gases and improving fuel efficiency. This has enabled the Hino S’elega Hybrid to meet the 2005 (new long-term) emission regulations and earn it “NOx & PM 10% Reduction Low Emissions Heavy Vehicle” certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. With regard to PM emissions, the new model has succeeded in a 50% reduction beyond the values stipulated by regulations and has achieved the fuel efficiency standards for FY2015.

Mazda Launches New Sales Network in Turkey

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that its national sales company (NSC) in Turkey launched its new sales network in early June 2008.

Mazda transferred responsibility for the Turkish market to Mazda Motor Europe (MME) in 2007, and the new NSC in Turkey was established in September 2007. Since then, further preparations were made toward the launch of operations in Istanbul in early June. The company was officially established as Mazda Motor Logistics Europe N.V. Merkezi Belçika Türkiye Istanbul Şubesi. Mr. Steve Newton was appointed managing director of the new distributor on June 2, 2008, and operations began on June 5. Mazda’s distributor has 10 employees, with 22 sales outlets in Turkey.

Mazda’s distributor in Turkey plays a unifying role in several areas of the Mazda business, including importation and distribution of Mazda-brand vehicles, parts and accessories; technical and servicing support; sales, marketing and public relations campaigns; and efforts to strengthen the company’s brand image and sales networks.

The full-scale commencement of sales operations for Mazda’s distributor in Turkey is part of Mazda’s successful and ongoing strategy to establish wholly owned distribution subsidiaries in Europe. Now with 21 national sales companies doing business in 39 countries, Mazda controls over 90 percent of its sales volume in the European market through wholly owned subsidiaries.

Mazda will continue to strengthen its brand image and further develop its sales network in Europe as key elements of the mid-term Mazda Advancement Plan.

MMC and Harbin China powertrain JV sign AT licensing agreement

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today signed a technology licensing agreement with its powertrain JV enterprise in China Harbin Dongan Automotive Engine Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (DAE) covering production of 4- and 5-speed automatic transmissions.

DAE began construction work on a new factory in March this year with a view to commence production in April 2010. Plans call for the new facility to have an annual production capacity of 150,000 units and to produce 50,000 units in its first year of operation. Production capacity will be raised to meet future increases in demand.

MMC made a 15.3 percent equity investment in DAE on its establishment in 1998 and has to date provided engineering and technical assistance covering the production of engines ranging in size from 1.3-liter to 2.0-liter and of 5-speed manual transmissions. The automatic transmission license agreement signed today will see a further handing on of Japan’s outstanding engineering technology and its commitment to excellence in craftsmanship. The technology transfer in question will allow DAE to supply core automotive parts not only its own group companies but also to other automobile manufacturers in China and will contribute to further growth and development of the Chinese automobile industry. The building up of a locally-based production system will allow MMC to meet AT market needs which are expected to increase on the back of the growth of the car market in China.

Subaru 2.5-litre Turbo Boxer Engine Wins at International Engine of the Year Awards 2008

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced that its 2.5-litre, Horizontally-Opposed, 4-cylinder boxer engine with a turbo charger was voted this year’s winner in the 2- to 2.5-litre engine class of the International Engine of the Year Awards. The award ceremony took place on May 7 at the Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany. Subaru was first awarded the same prize in 2006. The engine received the higher score from the voting panel again this year.

A panel of 65 renowned journalists from 32 countries served as judges in the competition organized by UKIP Media & Events - Automotive Magazines’ Division, Britain’s largest group of auto-technology magazines, which includes Engine Technology International and Automotive Testing Technology International. The judges applied their technical knowledge and impressions, scoring for the vehicle’s performance, drivability, ease of handling, fuel economy, and refinement. Based on the points given by the judges, the grand prize, prizes for best engines in eight capacity classes and three other categories were awarded.

Subaru’s winning engine delivers higher low and mid-range torque, thereby offering better overall performance and practical use. Design changes, including to the engine’s turbocharger, improves the vehicle’s powerful and controllable response, as well as its environmental performance.

Subaru’s current Forester and Impreza models for European, North American and Australian markets, and Legacy for North American and Australian markets, and Outback for North American market, come equipped with the award-winning 2.5-litre turbo engine.

FHI Unveils New Model Subaru EXIGA, a Seven-Seater for Panorama Touring

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced the debut of its new Subaru EXIGA in Japan. The EXIGA went on sale nationwide through Subaru dealerships today.

Based on the concept of a seven-seater with panoramic visibility for the touring experience, the EXIGA has been developed to provide a safe and pleasant journey for all occupants. Capitalizing on its accumulated know-how from building wagons and crossover SUVs, Subaru has succeeded in creating open and comfortable interior space for all the passengers to easily engage in conversation and share the experience of touring enhanced by dramatic wide-angle views through the windows.

The new model represents Subaru’s latest proposal for a new type of multi-passenger vehicle, built on Subaru’s strengths in vehicle stability, low noise, and quality ride —all realized by Subaru’s Horizontally-Opposed engine layout and the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3).
