Enterprise Europe Networks opens SME gateways to China and South Korea

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

The Enterprise Europe Network has opened 15 contact points in China and South Korea, giving European SMEs easier access to these attractive markets. This was announced at the third annual conference of the European Enterprise Network in Antwerp.

European Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani underlined that competition from companies outside the EU has become more intense as a result of the financial crisis. SMEs need open markets and fair competition in order to be competitive.

Today, 25% of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the EU export or have exported at some point during the last 3 years, a share which is expected to increase considerably. To support SMEs ready to do business abroad, the Network extends its reach to Asia, with additional contact points in China and more planned in Japan. With 589 partner organisations covering 47 countries including all 27 EU Member States, the Network acts as an innovative and unique channel to help SMEs to succeed.

European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship said: “European small businesses drive growth and create jobs. As markets become global, an increasing share of SMEs will turn their ideas and energy into exports outside their own countries or the EU. There are huge opportunities for SMEs in large trading partners like China and South Korea, and the Enterprise Europe Network can help smooth the way. We will bolster the process to promote SMEs with an update of the Small Business Act by the end of 2010 which will provide efficient support for entrepreneurs to launch their personal success story.”

Ministers still deadlocked on EU patent

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

A final deal on the EU patent was still being held hostage by divergent national interests at a Competitiveness Council held in Luxembourg.

EU ministers remain split between a group of countries led by France and Germany which support a trilingual system for the EU patent as proposed by the European Commission, and another group of states that oppose this solution and alternatively back a monolingual or multilingual regime.

The language used to file, contend and spread information about a patent is a crucial detail for countries’ competitiveness. Researchers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) capable of using their mother tongue for patents will have an advantage over competitors that speak different languages.

On the other hand, the current system, which protects all EU languages, has produced legal uncertainty and soaring costs, making patents more difficult and expensive to file in Europe than in other industrialised regions of the world.

At yesterday’s Competitiveness Council, Belgium, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU, pointed out that under the existing system, a company willing to commercialise the same patent in all 27 countries must pay something like 25,000 EUR in legal and administrative costs.

Some critics argue that this is in fact rather unlikely since most companies only register their patents in specific markets. Only a few multinationals are interested in taking on all the cost of operating their patents in every EU member state. SMEs, on the other hand, tend to use their patents only in bigger EU markets.

Lawmakers call for halt to ACTA deal

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

Members of the European Parliament have asked the Commission to halt a global trade agreement against counterfeiting (ACTA) after reports that negotiations on the controversial pact were concluded without their consent in Tokyo.

Reports that negotiations on the controversial agreement have ended alarmed MEPs, who have called on the Commission to explain the matter as soon as possible.

“If the agreement is indeed concluded, we demand from the Commission to present the final text of the negotiation to the European Parliament as soon as it is procedurally possible,” reads a joint statement from Greek Socialist MEP and European Parliament Vice-President Stavros Lambrinidis, French Socialist MEP Francoise Castex, Czech centre-right MEP Zuzana Roithova and German liberal MEP Alexander Alvaro.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has been mired in controversy from the off as policymakers and industry worry that it will give governments a blank cheque to write draconian anti-counterfeiting laws that endanger citizens’ fundamental freedoms.

MEPs have hit out hard at the Commission for keeping the official ACTA documents out of their reach and have warned they will not give the agreement their approval – a prerequisite under the EU’s Lisbon Treaty – without enough time to study the text.

FTA welcomes global aviation agreement to reduce emissions

Friday, October 15th, 2010

The Freight Transport Association has today welcomed the resolution passed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to manage and reduce the pollution from air transportation across the world.

The agreement sets out the target of improving fuel efficiency by two per cent every year to 2050, as well as capping aviation’s carbon emissions from 2020 and introducing a global CO2 standard for aircraft engines from 2013.

This resolution on the environment makes ICAO the first United Nations agency to endorse the establishment of a globally harmonised agreement for a sector addressing its CO2 emissions.
