Mazda Speed Wins Daytona 24 Hour For 23rd Time

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

With 22 class wins in the annual Rolex 24 at Daytona, expectations were high in the Mazda camp. The key is in total preparation and maintaining focus for 24 hours under extreme pressure. The 2010 race covered all of the highs and lows of racing. The Mazda cars swept the top three positions in qualifying before running into a variety of minor problems and old fashioned bad luck in the early hours. Perseverance by the Castrol Syntec SpeedSource RX-8 #70 team of Sylvain Tremblay, David Haskell, Nick Ham, and Jonathan Bomarito resulted in a come from behind win.

The SpeedSource team started the race in third place, but lost a lap when a caution flag came out after they had pitted. They lost another six laps after being hit by a Daytona Prototype (DP) car approximately 8 hours into the race. The team spent the next ten hours methodically moving up the charts until taking the lead at lap 563 in the 20th hour. They held the lead to the end, completing 707 laps of the 3.56 mile Daytona circuit for a total distance of over 2,500 miles.

“The SpeedSource team lived up to the MAZDASPEED spirit of ‘The Will To Never Give Up’. Thanks to the entire team from drivers to the shop guys who built the cars, to the support crew. As soon as the checker flag dropped, we were flooded with e-mails, phone calls, text messages, and twitters congratulating the team. The RX-8 rotary power was flawless, and our bad luck in the early hours was countered by others having issues later in the race. Even when SpeedSource took the lead on lap 563 there was no celebration – just a resetting of the deck with a race still to win.”

“Everyone at Mazda in North America. and Japan is proud of our association with the Castrol Syntec SpeedSource team. This is their second win at Daytona and the 23rd for Mazda and is dedicated our dealers and 9,000 club racers. They are the heart and soul of our operation. Now that our season has begun we are looking forward to a year-long battle for the Grand-Am GT Manufacturers Championship, ” noted Robert Davis, Senior Vice President, Product Development and Quality, and the man responsible for Mazda’s North American motorsports operations under the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development banner.

In addition to the winning Castrol Syntec RX-8, Mazda was represented by a strong line-up of teams. These teams will allow Mazda to launch their most aggressive challenge for the Grand-Am GT manufacturers championship.

Toyota Answers Questions About the Sticking Accelerator Pedal Recall

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Toyota answers questions that we see you are asking about the sticking accelerator pedal recall. Please also looks at Frequently Asked Questions For Sticking Accelerator Pedal Recall and Suspension of Sales on this site.

1. Is my car safe to drive until a fix is issued?
The condition is rare and generally does not occur suddenly. It seems to occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.

2. What do I do if I experience a sticking accelerator pedal before the fix is finalized? Should I bring my car to a dealer?
If you are experiencing this condition, immediately contact your nearest Toyota Dealer for assistance. No action is required at this time unless you feel you are experiencing this condition.

For details on what you should do if you experience a sticking accelerator pedal while driving, please review the Frequently Asked Questions For Sticking Accelerator Pedal Recall and Suspension of Sales on this site.

3. What is the actual issue affecting accelerator pedals?
In rare instances, there is a possibility that the affected accelerator pedal may stick in a partially downward position or slowly return to the non-pressed position.

4. Is there actually a problem with the vehicle’s computer/Electronic Control Unit?
Absolutely not. Toyota has never found an incident of unintended acceleration caused by the vehicle’s computer/electronic control unit.

5. Can I return my vehicle to Toyota if I purchased it in the five day period between the recall was announcement and Toyota stop sale on my vehicle? What are my options?
Toyota will work with customers who have concerns about their vehicles on a case-by-case basis.

6. How will Toyota handle fixing all affected vehicles in a timely manner?
Toyota is currently finalizing its recall remedy plans including a rapid deployment strategy of said remedy. Please continue to visit this site for updates on the recall.

7. Is this different than the Floor Mat Recall? If so, how?
There are two different recalls. Some vehicles are affected by both.

Sticking Pedal Accelerator Recall: The condition can occur in rare instances, over time, under certain environmental conditions – there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to idle position.

Potential Floor Mat Interference with Accelerator Pedal Recall: This condition is the potential for an unsecured or incompatible driver’s floor mat to interfere with or entrap the accelerator pedal and cause it to get stuck in the wide open position. Toyota has determined that this condition can occur in vehicles in which the driver’s side floor mat is not compatible with the vehicle and/or is not properly secured.

8. What if my vehicle is affected by both recalls? Which will be addressed first?It is Toyota’s intention to remedy both at the same time.

9. Why are mechanically similar Lexus and Scion vehicles not affected by this recall?
The recall affected pedal is confined to one of Toyota’s suppliers. That supplier’s pedals are not used on Lexus and Scion vehicles.

10. Which models are affected by the sticky accelerator pedal recall/stop sale?
Toyota’s accelerator pedal recall and suspension of sales is confined to the following Toyota Division vehicles:

* Certain 2009-2010 RAV4,
* Certain 2009-2010 Corolla,
* 2009-2010 Matrix,
* 2005-2010 Avalon,
* Certain 2007-2010 Camry,
* Certain 2010 Highlander,
* 2007-2010 Tundra,
* 2008-2010 Sequoia

Highlander hybrids and Camry hybrids are not affected by this action and will remain for sale.

Further, Camry, RAV 4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with VINs that begin with “J” are not affected and will remain for sale.

Hankook Tire participates in 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Hankook Tire the seventh-largest and one of the fastest growing tire manufacturers in the world, announced its participation in Tokyo Auto Salon 2010, the world’s largest automotive component and tuning exhibition, to be held at Nippon Convention Center in Tokyo during January 15~17. Hankook Tire, which is enjoying greater brand recognition in Japan through its consistent motorsports activities and expanding distribution network, will showcase a total of eight products that demonstrate Kontrol Technology, its philosophy and set of proprietary innovations. In particular, Hankook plans to unveil two new products featuring world-class technologies.

A diverse range of industry personnel related to the tire, auto component, tuning, service and aftermarket sectors, as well as premium customers attend Tokyo Auto Salon. Hankook Tire’s booth will display products that have received worldwide recognition for technology and performance as well as innovative tires targeted at the Japanese market.

Hankook Tire plans to unveil two new products for the very first time through Tokyo Auto Salon. Ventus R-s3 and Optimo H426 are high-performance, environmentally-friendly tires that demonstrate Hankook’s superior technology. During Tokyo Auto Salon 2009, Hankook received much attention from the highly competitive Japanese market for its pioneering technology present in three new tires, including the environmentally-friendly product, enfren, and two high-performance tires.

The Ventus R-s3 that will be revealed at Tokyo Auto Salon 2010 is a next-generation tire employing motorsports technology. Winner of the 2009 Super GT300, Kinoshita Mitsuhiro, participated in its development. From the stylish fire frame to the compound, grip, and contact patch, the Ventus R-s3 boasts pure racing technology and has already proven its capabilities in prominent global racing competitions.

The Optimo H426 is an environmentally-friendly tire that satisfies demands for both braking performance and lower fuel consumption. New materials, fuel efficient comfort technology, and 20% reduced rolling resistance (the resistance that occurs when a tire rolls on a flat road) compared to existing products contribute to minimizing damaging effects on the environment and enhancing fuel economy.

Kim Se-heon, Managing Director of Branding at Hankook Tire, said, “The exhibition will serve as a good opportunity for us to showcase Hankook’s technology to global leaders in Japan, the world’s leading tire market. We plan to bolster our profile on the global market through aggressive marketing to increase our brand awareness and promote our world class technology by continuing to develop and launch ultra high performance and environmentally products.”

Launched in 1983, Tokyo Auto Salon is the world’s largest automotive component and tuning exhibition. Every year, approximately 320 automobile and tire related companies participate in the show. Hankook Tire first displayed its technologically advanced tires at the event in 2003. Tokyo Auto Salon 2010 is expected to attract some 250,000 visitors, including tire dealers from all over Japan and Southeast Asia and dealers related to fleet (vehicles leased en masse by large corporations) services.
