Michelin XZM industrail tyres rise to new heights in querry operation

Monday, November 28th, 2011

97A long and reliable tyre life is a priority in all industrial applications, but rarely more so than when the tyres are fitted to complex machinery operating at a height of 60ft.Hoddam Contracting, which owns Broom Quarry in Newbie, Dumfries & Galloway, began using Michelin XZM industrial tyres on its Finlay barrel-wash during the summer of 2007. The eight Michelin tyres have since completed over 11 million revolutions, covering more than 21,700 km each – without a single incidence of tyre-related downtime.

A spokesman at Hoddam Contracting, says: “Compared with our previous fitments this performance is nothing short of outstanding. Tread wear has been minimal; without question, the tread on the Michelins is good for at least another four years’ operation. We’ve not even had to carry out any pressure adjustments to-date.

Previously the barrel-wash had operated on budget tyres which were fitted as standard when it was purchased second-hand. In comparison, the superior quality of the Michelin XZM tyres has saved significant expenditure on repairs and replacements, whilst eliminating downtime.

In the three years prior to adopting the Michelin policy, we had a total of 15 tyre-related incidents on the barrel-wash. Every time a tyre failed our production was stopped. We had to hire a 25-tonne off-road crane, simply to raise the barrel whilst the tyre technician went up and changed the tyre. It cost us a considerable amount of lost production time and was a nuisance, not to mention the added cost of the crane hire.

Michelin’s XZM tyres are dedicated industrial fitments more commonly used on materials handling equipment, with many fork lift truck fleets preferring their radial construction to the solid or cross-ply tyres commonly used. They were recommended to the customer by local tyre specialist Denton Tyres, which felt the XZM’s proven resistance to cuts and damage, combined with strong wear characteristics, would deliver unrivalled reliability and excellent cost-per-hour benefits.

Nokian Heavy Tyres to adjust production to reflect a weaker demand

Monday, November 28th, 2011

The production output of Nokian Heavy Tyres will be adjusted to reflect a weaker demand. The order book for heavy tyres has decreased and demand estimates for 2012 have weakened.

The preliminary plan is to change the working pattern of the heavy tyre production to a discontinued five-day three-shift model, and to reduce the work input of approximately 100 factory employees and 15 white-collar officials with lay-offs and possibly with personnel cuts. The production adjustments are estimated to start in January-February 2012 and to continue until further notice.

The statutory negotiations related to the matters mentioned above will be started according to the law in Finland. Negotiations will concern the whole personnel of Nokian Heavy Tyres, i.e. a total of approximately 260 people.

In Nokian Car Tyres the order book is strong with no signs of weakening. Nokian Tyres plc retains the financial guidance from 4 November: In 2011, the company is positioned to provide strong sales growth and to improve operating profit significantly compared to 2010.

The Brazilian Grand Prix From A Tyre Point Of View

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Pirelli’s first season of Formula One after 20 years comes to an end at Interlagos: one of the shortest but most thrilling circuits on the calendar. Coming exactly eight months after the season started in Australia, this is the latest weekend of the year that the Formula One season has concluded since 1963.

The 71-lap race in Brazil has several unusual features to it, such as an anti-clockwise layout, an uphill start-finish straight (which increases the risk of the anti-stall mechanism kicking in at the start) and varying elevation, making it a popular venue for road cycling races as well. Here are some of the key points of the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace (as it is officially known) from a tyre point of view.

The start-finish straight is the highest part of a circuit, leading quickly downhill into the Senna Esses: a complex of corners where the stability of the car is vital, providing a good overtaking opportunity.Under full acceleration at 250kph the drivers tackle the Curva do Sol, which generates a sideways acceleration of 4G. This places a heavy demand on the tyre structure and compound throughout the corner.

On the Reto Opposta straight the top speed is 310kph, on a bumpy surface that tends to destabilise the cars. The structure of the tyre absorbs the bumps in the track and neutralises the vertical movement of the chassis, meaning that the car is perfectly planted to the ground for the braking area and the following corner.

After the straight there is a complex of slower corners, taken in second and third gear, where the drivers use the kerbs. Here there is little downforce and traction is crucial, meaning that the tyres have to generate the entire grip required to take the car through this complicated series of bends.

Afterwards the track climbs back uphill towards the start finish straight in a series of increasingly fast left-hand corners, putting plenty of energy through the tyres. The final corner is crucial to get the correct drive onto the start-finish straight, by getting on the power as early as possible. Again, it’s down to the tyres to translate the torque from the engine into effective grip as soon as possible. The track is less bumpy than it used to be since being resurfaced in 2005.

Yokohama Rubber Is Sole Tire Supplier for Macau Grand Prix for 29th Consecutive Year

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Tokyo – The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced that it will supply ADVAN racing tires to all of the competitors in the 58th Macau Grand Prix. That event, a Formula 3, will take place in Macau from Thursday to Sunday, November 17 to 20. This will be Yokohama’s 29th consecutive year as the exclusive tire supplier to the Macau Grand Prix. Yokohama will also be the exclusive tire supplier in the culminating event of 2011 FIA World Touring Car Championship. That race will take place in Macau in conjunction with the Macau Grand Prix. The weekend’s racing events will also include a touring car race for local drivers and a motorcycle race.

Macau’s Grand Prix takes place on public roadways and thus requires tires of different specifications from those used on racetracks. The ADVAN racing tires supplied by Yokohama incorporate know-how accumulated through nearly three decades as the exclusive tire supplier. Formula 3 has been a stepping stone to Formula 1 for several prominent drivers, including Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher, and the late Ayrton Senna.

The World Touring Car Championship, meanwhile, is the summit of touring car racing. Yokohama has been the sole supplier of tires for the World Touring Car Championship since 2006. That reflects the teams’ high regard for the superior handling performance and consistent quality of Yokohama tires. The company has contracted to supply ADVAN racing tires, which incorporate advances in reducing environmental impact, for the race through 2012.

Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia Tire Line Expanded

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

NASHVILLE – Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC (BATO) announces a 13-size expansion of its Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia tire line, bringing more crossover and SUV owners a fuel saving tire option. The line launched in early2010 with seven sizes.

The Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia was engineered for the cost- and environment-conscious CUV, SUV and light truck owners. In recent testing, the Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia showed a 42 percent improvement in rolling efficiency over a conventional Bridgestone tire*, which contributes to both improved fuel economy and reduced carbon emissions.

At Bridgestone Americas, we believe that regardless of the type of vehicle you choose to drive, you should be able to save a little at the pump and make a difference in helping create a cleaner environment for future generations to enjoy,” said Larry Magee, President, Consumer Tire U.S. & Canada, BATO. “The Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia exemplifies our latest efforts to help reduce the environmental impact of our light truck products, and is yet another step in our ongoing mission to improve the overall environmental performance of our products.

The announcement of the Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia expansion comes on the heels of the announcement of a 24-size extension of the Ecopia EP422, the Dueler’s sister all-season passenger product. Since launching in 2010, Bridgestone has expanded its Ecopia family of brands by 37 sizes. With the line expansion, there will be 61 sizes of Ecopia products available ranging from 15- to 20-inch in both OE and replacement markets.

The Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia is another key product that helps Bridgestone reach its global goal to improve tire rolling resistance by 25 percent in all of its products, resulting in less fuel use and CO2 emissions while driving by the year 2020 (based on a 2005 benchmark). The company also strives to reduce CO2 from its entire product lifecycle by 35 percent per sales by the same year.
