Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is to give the i MiEV SPORT AIR concept model its global debut at the 79th Geneva International Motor Show which runs from March 3 through March 15 at the Geneva Palexpo exhibition and conference complex (opening to the general public on March 5).

The i MiEV SPORT AIR explores the future possibilities for zero-emission vehicles, placing a greater bias on exhilarating driving pleasure. i MiEV SPORT AIR (sketch)

Powerful, instant torque from a beefed-up electric motor

Stable driving and handling and a low center of gravity, due to the in-floor lithium-ion battery

Zero on-road CO2 emissions
Together, these features along with the car’s “clear cutaway” top allow the driver to enjoy the exhilaration of fresh-air motoring while also highlighting its eco-friendly qualities.

South African Nissan Navaras finish fourth, fifth and 20th on Dakar Rally

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Three privately-entered Nissan Navaras, built by Nissan Motorsport in South Africa have finished fourth, fifth and 20th in the Dakar Rally Argentina-Chile, which ended in Buenos Aires on Saturday afternoon after 15 gruelling days’ racing across two continents and over the Andes Mountains.

Norwegian adventurer and mountain climber Ivar Erik Tollefsen and his English co-driver Quin Evans, regular competitors in the South African off road championship, finished a remarkable fourth overall in their Nissan Navara pickup competing under the banner of Team Overdrive of Belgium. They completed the 9 500-km ultra marathon cross country race in a time of 44 hr 15 min 31 sec and were 6 hr 4 min 34 sec behind the winners, South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz of Germany in a factory Volkswagen Race Touareg.

Fifth overall, 33 min 15 seconds behind Tollefsen and Evans, was former Polish rally champion Krzysztof Holowczyc and his Belgian co-driver Jean-Marc Fortin in a second Team Overdrive Navara. The third proudly South African Nissan, crewed by Hungarian cross country champions Laszlo Palik and Gabor Darazsi, finished 20th, 27 hr 22 min 19 seconds behind the winners.

“Ivar and Krzysztof’s performance on what was one of the toughest Dakars in recent years was massive. It’s simply heroic,” said Glyn Hall, general manager of Nissan Motorsport, who was team manager in South America for Team Overdrive. “They won the class for production vehicles and were only beaten by the state-of-the-art factory Touareg prototype and a multi-million dollar racing Hummer. We believe that Ivar’s fourth place is the highest a genuine privateer has achieved in the Dakar in the modern era.”

“South Africans can be very proud today,” added Hall. “Not only did our Navara pickups survive the world’s toughest off road race, but there were also two South Africans in the first two cars – Giniel de Villiers in the winning Touareg and his team-mate Ralph Pitchford, who was co-driver in the second-placed Touareg.

Host country Thailand sweeps podium in Expert Class to win its third overall title The 6th YAMAHA ASEAN CUP RACE Novice champion is new 14-year-old star from Malaysia

Over the two days of January 17 and 18, 2009, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and Thai Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. held “The 6th YAMAHA ASEAN CUP RACE in Thailand” at the Bangkok Racing Circuit (overall length: approximately 1,100 m).

The YAMAHA ASEAN CUP RACE is an international race where riders who have qualified in national competitions in the participating countries compete for the title of No. 1 in the ASEAN region in two classes, Expert and Novice. This is a one-make competition using Yamaha’s popular ASEAN market deluxe moped model T135 (Thai market name: SPARK135) and T110 (Thai market name: SPARK110), with all machines tuned to equal performance standards. The races are conducted in a two-heat format with winners decided on the basis of total points for the two heats.

A crowd of some 25,000 turned out to see the final races on January 18 (Sun.) at the Bangkok Racing Circuit adjacent a large shopping mall in the Thai capital. The first heat of the Expert Class was won by Thai rider Worawut Puttho to the excitement of the local fans. The second heat was won by another Thai rider, Chanon Chumjai, who had won pole position in the Saturday qualifying and finished 2nd in heat one. These performances made Chanon Chumjai the sixth YAMAHA ASEAN CUP RACE champion. Meanwhile, the Novice class championship went to 14-year-old Hafizh Syahrin of Malaysia, who was competing in his first ASEAN CUP and amazed the crowd with his riding process in winning the first heat and finishing 2nd in heat two. Also, by sweeping 1st to 3rd places in the Expert Class, the host country Thailand won its third overall championship title, following titles in 2004 and 2005.

On the withdrawal from the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC): Remarks by Ikuo Mori, President of Fuji Heavy Industries, at a press conference in Tokyo

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

For the past 19 years Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI) has entered its Subaru World Rally Team (SWRT) in WRC competitions in the pursuit of our goals of further enhancing Subaru brand awareness and elevating its brand image. Through its WRC entry, the Subaru factory team has endeavored to communicate the idea that Subaru vehicles provide safe, comfortable and pleasurable driving on differing terrain or roads around the world and under any climate conditions, all of which is enabled by our core technologies: Horizontally-Opposed engines and the Symmetrical All-Wheel drive system. The FIA WRC has been the most effective venue for Subaru vehicles to demonstrate their essential traits.

Subaru has won three WRC manufacturer’s championship titles and three driver’s championship titles. We now believe that our initial objective to enhance the value of the Subaru brand through WRC participation has been attained by these achievements. In addition, WRC has provided us with the know-how and technology required for grueling rally driving, which have fed back into our work in the development of Subaru cars.

Subaru’s disappointing results in the WRC in the past three years, however, prompted us to review participation in WRC and motorsports activities in our overall Subaru branding strategy as we drew up our future management plan. In this process we mulled over the idea of “graduating” from WRC and considered withdrawal at the end of 2009 season. The business environment in the meantime has dramatically deteriorated in the context of global economic turmoil since this fall, triggered by the financial crisis in the United States. The resulting widespread economic downturn has affected the automotive industry globally. These extreme circumstances required a decisive action and a change in our plan, which led to the withdrawal from WRC at the end of 2008 season, one year earlier than our original consideration.

GT Academy team reach their ultimate goal

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

After nine months of hard work, challenges and successes the Nissan/PlayStation® race team have achieved what they always believed to be possible. GT Academy has found a talented virtual racer and turned him into a real racing driver with the skills, determination and talent required of a GT champion.

Having been described as ‘an idea somewhere between crackpot and genius’ the team have proved that this was an idea nearer to the genius end of the scale. This weekend saw GT Academy winner Lucas Ordoñez realise his and their dream – to qualify for his International race license and successfully race as a key member of the team at the Dubai 24hr endurance race. This is the first time a racing driver has ever been found in this way and Lucas competed in a series of races to earn the required license to compete at this level. The challenges on the day were constant, with the race comprising of a mix of punishing day and night driving, searing temperatures and a packed 80-car grid. Lucas rose to the challenge not least of all at one stage achieving the 9th fastest time overall on an individual lap.

Lucas said; “As soon as I got in the 350Z I calmed down and felt at home. It was the most amazing feeling, at the end I saw all of my team climbing the barrier and cheering me on. It was the craziest feeling of my life.”

In addition the whole team experienced a huge amount of drama throughout the race and encountered a series of incidents that forced the car into the pits a total of 21 times. This included two accidents, a puncture and damage sustained from debris. Lucas dealt with the puncture and was not involved in any accidents. In short Lucas impressed his whole team with his driving.
