BMW S 1000 RR wins Fast Bikes magazine’s Sportsbike of the Year Award

Friday, August 6th, 2010

USA – The BMW S 1000 RR has been awarded the 2010 Sportsbike of the Year title by the United Kingdom’s Fast Bikes magazine. BMW Motorrad’s new sportsbike beat all the competition from Japan, Italy and the UK – including the Honda Fireblade, Ducati 1198 S Corse, Aprilia RSV4 R and Triumph Daytona 675 – to win this prestigious award.

Ten bikes were taken to the Circuit d’Alcarràs near Barcelona. With identical Bridgestone BT-003RS control tyres fitted to every machine, the Fast Bikes team of experienced testers completed an impressive 984 laps of hard riding. The judging and eliminations took place over many long nights of discussion until the panel of experts declared BMW’s first ever supersports machine the winner.

Alastair Fagan, lead tester on Sportsbike of the Year, said: “There aren’t enough superlatives to throw at the BMW. We need to invent some new words, but ‘utterly special’ will suffice for now.”

The testers praised the S 1000 RR for its advanced traction control, getting the lowest lap time of the entire competition and for making 179bhp on their dyno test. Fast Bikes Editor Richard Newland said “this really is a phenomenal achievement and a truly incredible bike.”

In addition to being Fast Bikes’ 2010 Sportsbike of the Year, the S 1000 RR also came out top in Spanish magazine Motociclismo’s prestigious ‘Masterbike’ challenge. ‘Masterbike’ is the world’s largest group test and involves 20 of the world’s best sportsbikes being judged by 16 motorcycle publications from the around the globe, including the UK’s Motorcycle News.

Furthermore, the RR was voted the ‘Best Sports Motorcycle 2010’ by readers of German magazine PS and was also voted ‘Motorcycle of the Year 2010’ in the readers’ vote of German motorcycle magazine Motorrad last March. In the USA, Cycle World magazine also chose the S 1000 RR as the Best Superbike of 2010.

Adrian Roderick, General Manager of BMW Motorrad UK, said: “The S 1000 RR is BMW’s first all-out supersport machine and we are over the moon with the reception it has received. It has been a massive sales success in the UK. In the first half of 2010 it was the best selling bike in the over 125cc category. The feedback we get on the S 1000 RR, from owners and the media alike, makes all the hard work and development worthwhile”.

Woods Earns 5th at WORCS Rd 7

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

McCleary, WA – Husaberg Factory rider, Nathan Woods, earned a hard fought 5th overall at the seventh round of the WORCS at Straddleline ORV Park.

Woods had a rough start coming around the first corner near the back of the pack. He put his head down and charged hard and found his way into the top ten by the end of the second lap. Woods continuously rode at a race pace near that of the leaders to consistently pick off at least one rider each lap of the race.

With two laps to go, Woods was sitting in 6th position, when 5th place rider Brenden Ritzman crashed hard in front of him. Ritzman’s crash allowed Woods to move into 5th where he would stay for the remainder of the race. Woods 5th place result marks the second top five finish for the Husaberg rider this season.

Creamer Closes in on the ATV Championship at Red Bud

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Michigan – Red Bud MX in Buchanan, Michigan, was the site of the penultimate round of the 2010 AMA ATV Motocross Championship. The race saw strong performances from the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team as points leader Josh Creamer rode two smart races to finish on the podium and increase his points lead, while teammate Dustin Wimmer took another top-five finish.

In the first moto, Creamer used the Suzuki QuadRacer R450’s power to grab a top-three start. Creamer logged consistently fast laps and closed in on the lead, but ran out of time and crossed the finish line in a strong second place. Wimmer, sitting second in the points standings, had a tough, mid-pack start in the first moto. The defending champion quickly pushed forward, finishing the moto with a well-earned fifth.

Creamer grabbed the holeshot in moto two and rocketed into the lead. But as the battle intensified, Creamer opted to play it safe, taking another second-place finish and keeping his points lead strong. Wimmer got a better start than he did in the first moto and managed to improve on his moto one score, as well, crossing the line in fourth.

“The track was really fast so it was tough to pass, especially in the first moto,” Creamer said. “I ended up getting into second place and hung out there because I didn’t want to risk anything so close to the end of the season, especially leading the series. I got the holeshot in the second moto and lead, but then got passed and I didn’t want to push it so I finished in second again. My Suzuki QuadRacer R450 worked awesome, and overall it was a good weekend.”

Creamer finished second overall with 2-2 moto scores, while Wimmer’s 5-4 finishes were enough to give him fourth overall. Creamer holds a 40-point advantage over Wimmer, and with one round remaining, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team is poised to make it a 1-2 finish on the season.

The final round takes place August 14-15 in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, at the famed Loretta Lynn’s Ranch.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki To Run Suzuki 250 Race Program In Expanded Suzuki Racing Efforts For 2011

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Brea, Calif – The Rockstar Energy Suzuki Supercross and Motocross team is pleased to announce it will continue racing in 2011 with even stronger support from Rockstar Energy Drink and American Suzuki Motor Corporation, and with the addition of Yoshimura R&D of America. Rockstar, Suzuki, and Yoshimura are driven to pass on the success they have enjoyed with Ryan Dungey and the RM-Z450 to the Lites class and the RM-Z250, and that’s where Rockstar Energy Suzuki comes in.

The Rockstar Energy Suzuki team will be running Suzuki’s 250-class racing efforts under the continued supervision of Bill Keefe. Bill is looking forward to the expanded program for next year: “We are excited about Suzuki’s corporate commitment to the 250 class. The RM-Z250 has a very strong motor with exceptional handling, and we plan on winning in 2011. Rockstar is the premier brand in energy drinks and a great partner for our racing efforts. Like us, they are fully committed to Supercross and Motocross.”

“We’ve had a lot of success with Ryan Dungey and the RM-Z450 motorcycle,” Yoshimura Vice President Don Sakakura said. “We feel it will once again be the bike, rider, and team to beat moving forward into the 2011 season. We feel that the same success will transfer to the 250 efforts. Rockstar has become an integral part of Suzuki racing, and we are very happy to continue the relationship and winning tradition.”

Rockstar Energy Drink Marketing Director Mike Kelso was also enthusiastic about the increased support: “The addition of the 250 Rockstar Energy Suzuki team to this level completes our step-up program throughout the sport. From amateur, to elite amateur, to the 250, and finally the 450 class of professional motocross racing, Rockstar is supporting all platforms.”

The expanded support for the 250 class will round out an impressive stable of contenders for 2011. With additional staffing and support, this Suzuki team should be tough to beat when the gate drops in Anaheim next January.
