Harley-Davidson CVO rolls out four models in 2011

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

MILWAUKEE – Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) blends perfect proportions of power, paint and chrome to create four limited-production motorcycles for the 2011 model season, each finished to exacting detail, each an ultimate expression of American motorcycle craftsmanship.

Harley-Davidson CVO builds super-premium motorcycles for customers who desire the exclusivity of intricate paint, custom accessories, and a high-performance powertrain not available on standard-production Harley-Davidson® models. CVO™ motorcycles define the ultimate vision of Harley-Davidson styling, features and performance.

Harley-Davidson will offer an all-new CVO model for 2011:

  • 2011 CVO Road Glide® Ultra: A premium touring machine with an aerodynamic frame-mounted fairing, the CVO Road Glide Ultra features a Road Tech® zumo® 660 GPS navigation system, upgraded Harman/Kardon Advanced Audio system with BOOM! Bagger speakers and an 8GB iPod® nano® and dock, and a two-up suspended touring seat with dual heat controls, adjustable backrests and leather insert surfaces. Wind tunnel testing was used to design a new mounting angle for the 16-inch Road Glide windshield and discreet deflectors that reduce buffeting in the rider area. A push-button, remote-control key fob activates power locks on the Tour-Pak® luggage carrier, saddlebags and ignition.

Three CVO models return for 2011 with new paint schemes and features:

  • 2011 CVO Street Glide®: The CVO Street Glide rolls out on a new 19-inch Agitator front wheel, the largest-diameter wheel ever offered on a Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle. Ventilated fairing lowers house two of the six speakers that are part of a high-output audio system boosted by a new high-efficiency, 100-watt-per-channel amplifier. The audio system also incorporates an 8GB iPod nano with dock and holder located in the right saddlebag. The side-fill fuel tank is topped with a flush-mount cap and LED gauge, and a new low-profile console. A new low-profile seat is faced with snake-style leather inserts, and the fairing is topped with a new seven-inch smoked wind deflector. The new paint scheme is executed in four different color combinations, and for the first time, those colors are complimented by a specific engine color and finish, wheel finish, tank console finish, muffler end-cap style and inner fairing color.
  • 2011 CVO Softail® Convertible: This two-in-one model is designed to quickly transform from custom touring to custom cruising by removing the detachable fairing, leather saddlebags, passenger pillion and backrest upright. The 2011 CVO Softail Convertible is equipped with a new audio system that integrates 3.5-inch two-way speakers and a 20-watt-per-channel amplifier into a redesigned inner fairing. Music is delivered by an 8GB iPod nano stored in a protective pouch. The locking leather saddlebags, leather rider seat and passenger pillion, and leather backrest pad have a new alligator-style insert. A new 1.25-inch welded mini-ape handlebar keeps the ride cool and comfortable. Standard Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), cruise control, keyless ignition and ABS (anti-lock braking system) give the CVO Softail Convertible more touring capability.
  • 2011 CVO Ultra Classic® Electra Glide®: The pinnacle of Harley-Davidson touring luxury and performance has a new suspended, heated, two-up seat with leather inserts, and matching adjustable backrests for rider and passenger. Dual mufflers feature new chrome billet end caps with black spears, and new mirrors are finished in mirror chrome. Trim panels for the CB pod insert, Screamin’ Eagle® 110 intake insert, and Tour-Pak lid insert feature a new diamond-cut pattern. The Road Tech zumo 660 GPS navigation system and remote-control power locks on the Tour-Pak, saddlebags and ignition are also standard equipment.

Each 2011 CVO model is powered by the fuel-injected Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110™ V-Twin, the largest-displacement engine produced by Harley-Davidson, rated at up to 115 ft. lbs. of torque. This engine is only available from the factory in CVO models.

CVO models are customized using exclusive components and paint treatments combined with existing items from the Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories catalog. The CVO program is often used to introduce new custom components and techniques before they are offered as individual accessories. Harley-Davidson CVO motorcycles are backed by a two-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

New Harley-Davidson® SuperLow model is pure riding fun

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

MILWAUKEE – The new Harley-Davidson SuperLow model reintroduces the pure pleasure of motorcycling. Balanced and responsive handling help rider and machine glide through corners with smooth confidence. A low seat height, the broad V-Twin powerband and clean styling complete an appealing package. The SuperLow is an open invitation to get out and ride.

Comfort is a key aspect of the SuperLow experience. A new solo seat with a deep, bucket shape and soft filler offers good support. The shape of the seat and its 25.5-inch height make it possible for many riders to put feet securely on the ground when the bike is at rest. A new handlebar is shaped to provide a natural arm position. Dual coil-over rear shocks offer 2.5 inches of wheel travel for a smooth ride.

Several interdependent technical elements play a role in the particular vehicle dynamics Harley-Davidson engineers sought to achieve in the SuperLow model. Changes made to tire size and a new front fork angle give the SuperLow 5.7 inches of trail for outstanding steering feel and feedback to the rider.

“In engineering the tire-and-wheel design and steering geometry for the SuperLow, the team applied lessons learned in the development of the XR1200X, which result in similarly significant gains in maneuverability,” said Jim Hofmann, General Manager, Motorcycle Product Planning. “The SuperLow is of course a very different motorcycle from the XR1200X, with a different mission, but the theme of achieving a precise balance of steering geometry, tire profile and construction, and suspension tuning is the same and equally successful. It takes just one ride on the SuperLow to believe it.”

The 18-inch-diameter front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel are fitted with Michelin® Scorcher® 11 radial tires. The profile, tread pattern and construction of these tires were developed specifically to enhance the handling of the SuperLow model. The new wheel-and-tire combination significantly reduces mass and inertia front and rear, which when combined with the tire design, improves steering response, and reduces steering effort.

Its low-profile radial tires, solo seat and long fuel tank shape give the SuperLow an appealing new stance that’s wide and low. With an MSRP starting at $7,999 in Vivid Black, the SuperLow is the lowest-priced model in the 2011 Harley-Davidson line. The SuperLow is also available in Cool Blue Pearl, as well as Merlot Sunglo/Vivid Black and Birch White/Sedona Orange two-tone paint.

Key features of the 2011 XL883L SuperLow include:

  • An air-cooled Evolution® 883cc V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), rated at 55 ft. lbs. peak torque at 3500 rpm, has a broad powerband for easy get-away from a stop and smooth power out of corners.
  • The 68/29 (2.34:1) final drive ratio is matched to the rear tire diameter and promotes smooth acceleration away from a stop and at low speeds.
  • Equipped with Black, Split Five-Spoke with Machined Rim wheels front and rear. Rear wheel is 17 x 4.5 inches. Front wheel is 18 x 3.5 inches.
  • Michelin Scorcher 11 radial tires are designed specifically for the SuperLow. Front is 120/70ZR18; rear is 150/60ZR17.
  • 39mm Showa® fork with 4.1 inches travel.
  • Coil-over pre-load adjustable rear shocks with 2.5 inches of wheel travel.
  • Seat height is 25.5 inches. Solo seat has a deep bucket shape and is easy to straddle.
  • The handlebar has a wide, flat bend that places the hand grips and controls in a natural riding position for outstanding control and comfort.
  • The 4.5-gallon fuel tank offers extended range and helps give the SuperLow a low-profile appearance.
  • Mid-mount foot controls.

S 1000 RR: The New Generation of Drag Bike

Friday, July 30th, 2010

USA – The dynamic and powerful S 1000 RR has stunned the motorcycle world with its class-leading power in a package that can dominate on the track and also be equally at home on the road.

In the USA, American Brock Davidson saw a very different potential in the RR. The class-leading power and dynamic chassis could well be turned into a very potent weapon in a class of racing that is measured in micro components of time – drag racing.

Brock Davidson heads up Brock’s Performance in Dayton, Ohio. He founded this company in 2002 with the aim of creating engineering excellence for both road and track. Brock’s performance-enhancing products like BST carbon fibre wheels, titanium exhaust system and the extended swingarms have helped create a unique BMW quarter-mile sprinter. As well as the extended wheelbase bike there is the ‘Stock’ version. Depending on the rules of the competition, either or both can have track time over a weekend.

Both produce 203hp (at the rear wheel) with their Dynojet PCV fuel injection module and modified mapping to match Brock’s beautifully produced exhaust system. It is not only in the way this machine looks that the BMW impresses. The standard version has hit the finish line at 8.95 seconds while the 1663.7 mm wheelbase bike has managed a very impressive 8.497 seconds in the ¼ with both reaching trap speeds approaching 257 km/h. The long-wheelbase bike also boasts a 0-200 km/h reading of just 5.2 seconds!

The first outing for the Brock’s Performance RR was at an AMA meeting in Michigan, with Ryan Schnitz in the seat. The extended swingarm model had the crowd stunned. Here was the fastest bike of its class in the world and this was its first trip up the strip! For Brock it was a vindication of his original hunch:

“The BMW has a better power-to weight ratio than any bike we have ever run and we can see it not only grabbing the headlines but riders looking for performance – be it on the drag strip, track or indeed the road. There is no better way to develop specialist parts than in competition,” said Brock at the end of a successful weekend.

The stunning debut had four-times AMA National Champion, Keith Dennis signing on as team rider and he had the standard wheelbase version in action at a recent event in Alabama where, again, the RR stood out.

“We are going to further develop the BMW with nitrous injection for ‘Real Street’ competition and do more work on engine hard-part development after we see what it can take in pure stock form,” says Brock. “So far, the engine has been stronger than anything we have been able to throw at it from a normally aspirated standpoint. We have ‘torture tested’ both of these bikes like no others on the dyno and racetracks during accelerated product development and performance testing, and they are extremely impressive. Every component has been engineered to the highest standards, but nitrous oxide is an entirely different beast that was not in the original BMW design criteria, so it’s our job as an aftermarket manufacturer to take it from here to please the stupid fast crowd,” said Brock, with an eye to the future.

It is not only on the strip where heads are turned. “We are always very busy at our display area, where the BMW always creates a storm of interest. We were at the recent World Superbike meet at Salt Lake City in the BMW Motorrad area and did that grab us some interest!” said Brock.

Drag racing might not have been on the BMW Motorrad agenda but thanks to Brock Davidson the S 1000 RR now has a new area of motor sport in which to display its unique style and dynamic power.
