TMC Holds Awards Ceremony for “Toyota Dream Car Art Contest”

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces it held an awards ceremony today for the “Toyota Dream Car Art Contest”, a TMC art competition for children in Asia, including Japan.

TMC Senior Managing Director Yoshimasa Ishii presented the awards at the ceremony, attended by first- and second-place prizewinners, their guardians and others.  In the contest, 45 entrants received prizes, including one for first place, 13 for second place and 31 for third place.

The contest, held since 2004, aims to create an opportunity—through creative drawings on the theme “Your Dream—The Car of the Future”—to encourage children’s interest in cars, while also demonstrating the joy and importance of having a dream.  This year, TMC received approximately 19,000 entries from 12 countries and regions in Asia, including Japan.

At the ceremony, Ishii expressed his hope that the dreams children have will lead to the creation of more affluent societies, saying:  “I was extremely impressed by the scale of the dreams reflected in the artwork, and I believe that every one of your dreams will have a major influence on the cars of tomorrow, as well as on the future of our planet.”  Plans call for first- and second-place prizewinners to go, as a supplementary prize, on a two-day excursion to the TOYOTA Shirakawa-Go Eco-Institute to experience Japanese wildlife and deepen international exchange.

With the aim of being a good corporate citizen, TMC holds The Toyota Dream Car Art Contest as part of its global social contribution activities that promote the creation of even more prosperous and sustainable societies.

NISSAN READIES ITS ELECTRIC VEHICLE PLATFORM

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today previewed its electric vehicle (EV) platform on a Tiida-based prototype to demonstrate the superior driving pleasure of a pure zero-emission vehicle. It also showcased a sophisticated EV-IT system developed to support electric driving 24/7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

EV prototype based on the newly developed EV platform

The dedicated EV platform is comprised of a highly rigid body, high-performance motor, compact lithium-ion battery with high power output and energy capacity, delivering outstanding driving performance and safety, while offering a quiet and peaceful driving experience – a unique feature of a fully-electric drivetrain.

The in-house developed electric motor delivers 80kW/280Nm for high response and powerful acceleration. Nissan’s unique motor control also contributes to the vehicle’s seamless acceleration.

The 24kWh laminated compact lithium-ion battery pack is placed under the vehicle floor for more efficient packaging, without compromising cabin or cargo space. The battery layout also allows smooth underfloor air-flow which helps reduce drag. Additionally, the regenerative brake system employed to recharge the battery during deceleration and braking extends the driving range to more than 160km*1 under a full charge.

High durability is achieved by employing an additional frame for the battery pack to significantly improve the rigidity of the platform. The combination of a high rigidity platform and electric powertrain minimizes vibration and external sounds to produce a quiet and pleasing drive.

Vos and Pitchford win Sun City 400 and extend championship lead

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Reigning champion Duncan Vos and co-driver Ralph Pitchford won the Sun City 400 in North West Province on Saturday when they brought their class SP Nissan Navara home.

It was the pair’s fourth victory in the first five rounds of this year’s South Africa Off Road Championship (SAOC) and extends their championship lead to 60 points over South Africa Nissan team-mates Ivar Erik Tollefsen and Quin Evans with three rounds remaining. The win also extends Nissan’s winning streak to 11 since the Eastern Cape 400 in April last year.

Nissan scored a clean sweep of the three production vehicle classes, with privateers Coetzee Labuscagne and Johan Gerber taking the class D honours in their Nissan Hardbody and Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie earning an impressive debut class E win in their South Africa Nissan Motorsport-prepared Nissan Hardbody.

Vos and Pitchford showed their class once again with another come from behind performance. They started Saturday’s race in seventh place among the production vehicles after a disappointing prologue, but reached the halfway compulsory service stop in the lead.

“We struggled in the dust in the early stages and were slowed with a puncture,” said Vos. “But we pushed hard and took advantage of the fact that many of our rivals ran into problems. Apart from another puncture early in the second loop, we had a clean run throughout the rest of the race.”

City became the third model produced by HAB locally in Brazil following Civic and Fit whose production began in 1997 and 2003, respectively. The price of the City FFV starts from R$56,210 (approximately 2.75 million yen at an exchange rate of R$1=49 yen), and the company plans to sell 17,000 units in 2009.

The City FFV was developed based on the third-generation City, which is currently being sold in Thailand and other countries, adapting some specifications to accommodate specific needs in the Brazilian market. The design of the City is based on the total pursuit of a vehicle with road presence within a compact, yet dynamic form. In addition, class-leading* interior space was achieved to create a cabin that surrounds the occupants with an open and secure feeling. The City is equipped with a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine, which is further advanced in every direction including engine output, fuel economy and environmental performance. Furthermore, with its advanced safety and environmental performance, the City offers values in every area at a high level, setting a new benchmark in the subcompact sedan category.

Honda City was first introduced in Thailand in 1996. Cumulative sales of the City now exceed 1.2 million units in over 45 countries around the world.
