Ten years on from the start of serial production, the international automotive supplier Continental is producing its 40-millionth piezo injector at its Limbach-Oberfrohna/Stollberg site in the German state of Saxony. The injection nozzles are fitted in the engines of passenger cars and commercial vehicles worldwide. “With this ultramodern injection technology we have created the technological conditions for the production of high-performance yet economical diesel and petrol engines which meet even the strictest environmental standards,” comments José Avila, member of the the Continental AG Executive Board and Head of the Powertrain Division.

Around 1,300 people are currently employed in the production of the injectors in Limbach-Oberfrohna/Stollberg. The injectors, which inject diesel into the cylinders at a pressure of around 2,000 bar, are assembled under clean-room conditions. In 2000, piezo technology revolutionized the common rail injection systems used in diesel engines. In this technology, the nozzle in the injector is controlled not by an electromagnet but by a piezo actuator consisting of more than 300 small, wafer-thin ceramic plates arranged one above another.

A switching voltage causes the piezo actuator to expand, which in turn opens the nozzle’s injection holes within milliseconds. These very short response times make it possible for the fuel to be apportioned accurately and repeatedly between up to seven injections per combustion cycle. The result is a highly efficient combustion process because the apportionment of fuel as accurately as possible to the respective operating situation is the principle underlying good thermodynamic engine efficiency. In this respect, piezo technology will help to ensure that the stricter threshold limit values for nitrogen oxides and soot particles under the Euro 6 standard – which will be in force from 2014 – will be complied with, and will also reduce CO2 emissions by a further three per cent compared with conventional diesel direct injection technology. In addition, piezo common rail injection (PCR) engines offer better performance, yet they are both more economical and quieter.

Hankook Tire Korea’s leading tire company and the seventh largest worldwide, today introduced two new winter performance tires to the Russian and CIS markets, the “Winter i*cept evo” and the “Winter i*Pike LT” at the Moscow International Automobile Salon (Crocus Expo IEC, Moscow, August 27 ~ September 5, 2010).

Hankook’s Winter i*cept evo, the ultimate in winter performance tires, features a dual function asymmetric tread design with three longitudinal grooves for wet braking aquaplaning. The outside tread design is optimized for dry and wet performance with 3D sipes. It reinforces the fleet’s snow, abrasion, and handling performance by preventing block slides and maximizing edge effects. On the inside, Hankook’s polar bear claw groove and auxiliary internal sipes as well as the inside-to-outside groove design provide the perfect snow and wear performance. The Winter i*cept evo is optimized with a new silica compound while 3D kerfs are applied to ensure high block hardness and maximize the Kerf edge effect on dry and snowy roads.

The Winter i*Pike LT, Hankook’s new durable stud winter tire for vans and light trucks, is expected to offer incredible traction and control on snow and ice-covered roads ensuring safer winter driving. A 3D groove was applied to make snow and water flow fluent in the center groove and to improve snow and ice grip performance. The stairway type 3D shoulder block as well as the 6-row pin arrangement strengthens snow traction. Meanwhile the sidewall design with pictograms of icebergs gives an aesthetically striking appearance.

The newly launched Winter i*cept evo and Winter i*Pike LT are the results of Hankook’s continuing innovation in high-performance winter tires that have been constantly recognized by renowned tire tests like those conducted by ADAC and Gute Fahrt. Moreover, the Hankook i*cept and i*Pike winter tires each received environmental protection awards. As long ago as 2004 they were awarded the Swan, the official and highly prestigious Scandinavian eco-label. The Winter i*cept evo is also a winner of the Red Dot Design Award this year.

U.S. :The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have sent their proposed fuel economy and emissions standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks to the White House for review by the Office of Management and Budget.

Details of the proposal were not available.

In May, President Obama ordered the two agencies to cooperate on new rules that may establish fuel economy standards and cut carbon emissions for commercial trucks.

OMB typically takes about 90 days to review rules, so details on the proposal likely will be made public before the end of the year.

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods inched up 0.2 percent in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This marked the first month-to-month gain since March, following a 0.5 percent drop in June and a 0.3 percent slip in May.

The PPI measures changes in prices received by producers of goods and services, such as motor carriers, according to Bob Costello, chief economist of the American Trucking Associations. In his Weekly Economic Recap, Costello said food prices were also up for the first time since March, rising 0.7 percent.

“Despite July’s increase, pipeline inflation is still subdued,” Costello said. “Compared with a year earlier, the PPI was up 4.1 percent, while the core PPI rose only 1.5 percent.”

Core PPI does not include volatile food and energy prices, he said.

For the trucking industry, PPIs rose over last year, but at a slower rate than in June. Truckload PPI was up 1.8 percent from July 2009, after increasing more than 3 percent the previous two months, Costello said. Less-than-truckload PPI was up 0.1 percent year-over-year, down from June’s 1 percent increase.

Another economic indicator, the Leading Economic Index, also inched up this week, gaining 0.1 percent in July. This follows a 0.3 percent drop in June, Costello said.

FULLERTON, CA – Consumers looking for guidance on how to choose the right tires for their trucks and SUVs can get answers from Yokohama Tire Corporation’s third installment of Tire Tips, a series of short educational videos created to help people learn more about tires, from proper maintenance to improving fuel efficiency.

The “how to choose a truck/SUV tire” video is hosted by off-road racing champions Cameron and Heidi Steele. Cameron, who is also a TV commentator, was the host in the first two Yokohama Tire Tips videos: the importance of properly inflated tires and how to read the sidewall of a tire.

“It’s not easy trying to figure out what type of truck tire to get,” said Paul Algarin, Yokohama Tire product analyst. “As Cameron and Heidi explain, there are many factors to consider, including size, tread, performance and comfort. And who better to give truck tire tips than off-road stars like Cameron and Heidi? Their explanations are engaging and easy to understand.”

Algarin said future videos will focus on subjects such as ways to achieve better fuel efficiency, judging tread wear and choosing the correct winter tire. The next video is slated for September.
