Toyota Marks Construction Start of Second Indian Plant

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) held an official ceremony today to mark the beginning of construction of the second plant of its automobile production and sales company in India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited (TKM).

The ceremony was held at the proposed plant site on the outskirts of Bangalore in India’s Karnataka State, and was attended by Chief Minister of Karnataka B. S. Yeddyurappa.

At the ceremony, TMC Senior Managing Director Akira Okabe expressed the company’s aim in the following way: “We hope to establish in Karnataka a firm base for our monozukuri culture—which combines production technologies based on the Toyota Production System and human resources development—and to be able to contribute to the growth of India through our activities in Karnataka.”

The second TKM plant is scheduled to have an annual production capacity of 100,000 passenger vehicles (including a new compact vehicle) when it begins operation in 2010.

Both TKM plants are playing an important role in TMC’s sustainable plant activities, which seek to emphasize the role of nature in creating production sites that are in harmony with their natural surroundings, by pursuing the following initiatives:

  • Reducing energy consumption through the introduction of production technology with lower CO2 emissions
  • Using renewable energy sources, such as biomass, solar and wind power
  • Striving for a harmonious coexistence with the local community through such activities as planting trees at plants
  • Reducing environmental impact through measures such as introducing a wastewater recycling system, using water-borne paints, and achieving zero landfill waste

TKM is a joint venture automobile production and sales company, established on the outskirts of Bangalore in 1997 by TMC and the Kirloskar Group.  Currently, TKM produces the “Corolla” and the IMV series “Innova” minivan, with annual production of 52,000 vehicles in 2007 (an 18% year-on-year increase).

TMC is expanding its local production in India and is actively investing to create attractive products.  Its policy is to continue to contribute to the development of India’s automotive industry and to the country’s overall economy.

Central Motor to Become Full TMC Subsidiary

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that TMC and Central Motor Co., Ltd. (Central Motor) have signed a share exchange agreement by which Central Motor shall become a wholly owned subsidiary of TMC, each company having adopted a resolution approving the share exchange at a meeting of its board of directors held today.

The decision was made to establish an even stronger relationship between TMC and Central Motor, to realize a more efficient production system for the Toyota Group, and to further improve quality and cost competitiveness, with an aim to generally strengthen the Toyota Group.

In the midst of rapid changes in the automotive industry environment, TMC believes that immediate response to secure domestic human resources, diversify disaster risks and immediately respond to changes in demand is essential.  This is reflected by the Toyota Group’s policy to position Japan’s Tohoku region (in northeastern Japan) as its third domestic production base, in addition to production bases in the Chubu region (in central Japan) and in northern Kyushu (in southern Japan).

Central Motor, after taking into consideration various factors such as the aged state of its head office plant, changes in the environs surrounding the company and distribution inefficiencies, has decided to move its head office plant to Miyagi Prefecture (in the Tohoku region), with the aim to start operations there in 2010.

An outline of the method, timetable and share exchange ratio for Central Motor’s conversion to a full TMC subsidiary follows.

New Plant to Boost Toyota Diesel Engine Output in Thailand

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that Siam Toyota Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (STM), TMC’s engine production base in Thailand, will build a new plant to boost its annual diesel engine production capacity by 150,000 units in 2010.

The new plant, to be built on STM’s current premises, will give STM an annual diesel engine production capacity of 350,000 units, up from 200,000 units. Including gasoline engines, STM will have an overall production capacity of 650,000 engines a year.

STM President Shigeru Murai announced the expansion at a joint press conference with Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd. (Toyota’s vehicle production base in Thailand) in Bangkok, attended by Thai government officials.

As a global production and supply base for the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) Project, begun in 2004, STM provides diesel engines to IMV-producing countries. In 2007, STM produced 229,000 diesel engines, of which 72,000 were exported to six countries, including India and ASEAN member countries.

The STM expansion is to meet increasing demand for the IMV series, which is popular in various regions around the world, and will be backed by an additional investment of approximately 17.3 billion yen (approx. 5.4 billion baht). The new plant is expected to create approximately 700 jobs.

The Toyota IMV Project is aimed at creating a worldwide optimal production and supply network. Currently, the IMV series consists of three types of pickup truck, a minivan and an SUV.

Toyota to Produce Camry Hybrid in Australia

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today at an Australian government-sponsored press conference in Nagoya, Japan, that it will begin producing the “Camry Hybrid” at the Altona Plant of Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Ltd. (TMCA), as part of an effort to further popularize hybrid vehicles worldwide.

“We decided to build the Camry Hybrid in Australia because Australians are keenly aware of environmental issues including global warming, and we are confident that the Camry Hybrid will be well received.  Toyota intends to make further efforts toward popularizing hybrid vehicles”, said TMC President Katsuaki Watanabe at the press conference attended by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Kim Carr, and Australian Ambassador to Japan Murray McLean.  Also representing TMC were Executive Vice President Tokuichi Uranishi and Senior Managing Director Akira Okabe.

Production of the Camry Hybrid at the Altona Plant (in the State of Victoria in southeastern Australia) will commence in early 2010, with an annual production target of 10,000 vehicles.

After receiving TMC’s decision officially today, Victorian Premier John Brumby will hold a press conference at the Altona Plant to be attended by TMCA President Masahide Yasuda.

Ever since the introduction in 1997 of the Toyota Prius—the world’s first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle—TMC has been making a concerted effort to promote and popularize hybrid technology, as part of its high-priority environmental-management policy.

Toyota aims to sell 1 million or more hybrid vehicles annually as early as possible in the 2010s and, taking market needs into consideration, is working to put in place an optimal hybrid vehicle production system worldwide. Source: TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION
