Honda Commemorates 50 Years of Innovation in America

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Honda marked its first 50 years in America, commemorating the establishment of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., in a small Los Angeles storefront on June 11, 1959. Honda associates observed the occasion with a brief ceremony at the company’s Torrance, Calif. headquarters.

Honda’s First U.S. Headquarters

“On behalf of the tens of thousands of Honda associates in America, past and present, we offer our deepest thanks to our customers for placing their trust in Honda over the past 50 years,” said American Honda President & CEO Tetsuo Iwamura. “Today, in the face of new challenges, including the preservation of our environment, we renew our commitment to exceed the expectations of our customers and society.”

Japan speeds up efforts to promote bullet trains in America, Brazil

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

The Japanese government is getting on board with the private sector in promoting the sale of bullet trains in America and Brazil, believing that global warming is spurring a boom of interest in environmentally friendly high-speed railway systems. In the short-term, the government is expected to devote itself to public relations activities on behalf of Japanese businesses with America and Brazil. The Foreign Ministry believes the government’s promotion of the speedy trains will become a drawing card in its diplomacy efforts to brand Japan as an eco-friendly nation. Obama in April announced a sweeping environment-oriented stimulus package and said, “I’m announcing my administration’s efforts to transform travel in America with an historic investment in high speed rail.”
The measures included a grandiose super express network linking major American cities, including a rail line between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Brazil is believed to be ahead of the United States in starting the construction of a high-speed rail system as it is scheduled to host the World Cup finals in Rio de Janeiro in 2014. The country is gearing toward opening a fast rail line measuring about 550 kilometers, including between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most populated city.

Honda celebrates 50 years of great success in America

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

It is hard to believe that Honda has been in America for half a century, but it was on June 11, 1959 that Honda opened up a small office in Los Angeles.

From there, it was upwards and onwards, from the S500 sports car, through the 1969 introduction of the landmark CB750 motorcycle to the Honda Civic car and up through the Accord and the luxury car Acura. Honda is now part of American culture – most of the ones sold in America are made in America.

Toyota aims to avoid job cuts in America

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Toyota, quietly pounded by the global economic downturn, is aggressively cutting costs at its York Township engineering center in hopes of avoiding layoffs. Toyota, which long had an engineering presence in Ann Arbor Township, officially moved its operation to York Township in 2008 after finishing a $187 million expansion.

The automaker, which secured state incentives to acquire the 695-acre site in 2006, originally said it would have about 1,100 employees at the new operation.
