Honda Develops Ecological Drive Assist System for Enhanced Real World Fuel Economy

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced the development of the Ecological Drive Assist System, which combines three functions to enhance fuel economy: the ECON Mode utilizes harmonized control of the continuously variable transmission (CVT) and engine to support more fuel-efficient driving; the guidance function uses speedometer color to provide real-time guidance on fuel-efficient driving; and thescoring function provides feedback about current driving practices, as well as feedback on cumulative, long-term fuel-efficient driving. The world’s first* system to combine these three functions in a comprehensive approach to fuel economy enhancement, the Ecological Drive Assist System will be implemented for the first time on the all-new Insight hybrid vehicle in spring 2009.

Furthermore, for the Japan-market version of the Insight equipped with the optional Honda HDD InterNavi System, the Ecological Drive Assist System has an added function that enables drivers to receive advice on driving practices that enhance fuel economy.

Since driving practices have a large impact on fuel economy, Honda developed the Ecological Drive Assist System to further enhance the real-world fuel economy through controlling the CVT and engine based on the actual driving conditions and enabling the driver to learn how to drive more fuel-efficiently. In particular, the scoring function provides cumulative, long-term feedback through graphic ‘leaves’, which grow over time as drivers become more proficient in fuel-efficient driving. The joy of growing these leaves over a long time will encourage drivers to learn how to drive more fuel-efficiently.

The glacier white body color conveys the FC Sport’s clean environmental aspirations while the dark wheels and deeply tinted glass provide a symbolic contrast befitting of the vehicle’s unique combination of clean power and high performance. Green construction techniques further contribute to a reduced carbon footprint. An organic, bio-structure theme is carried through to the body construction where exterior panels are intended to use plant-derived bio-plastics.

Nissan to Display Cooperative Intelligent Transport Technologies at ITS World Congress

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that four advanced Cooperative Intelligent Transport technologies will be shown at the 15th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The ITS World Congress, which is being held at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Center from Nov. 16 - 20, showcases future vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications systems.

Cooperative ITS Prototype

The systems on display include Signal Violation Warning, Cross Traffic Notification, Oncoming Traffic Notification and Cooperative Intelligent Cruise Control. Nissan is developing these advanced systems for future applications to help inform the driver and help control the vehicle, with the goal of contributing to improved traffic safety as the infrastructure is implemented. Following are brief descriptions of each:

Signal Violation Warning: If the vehicle is approaching an intersection with a red light or a light that will soon turn red without the driver applying the brakes, the Signal Violation Warning system issues visual and audible warnings to notify the driver of impending danger. These warnings are generated based on the traffic signal phase (color and duration), vehicle speed and distance to the intersection. The system calculates when the vehicle will arrive at the intersection and issues a warning if a conflict is anticipated.

Cross Traffic Notification: As the vehicle approaches an intersection without a traffic signal, the system will issue a crossing traffic notification to warn the driver of potentially unseen cross traffic. Warnings are generated based on information received from other vehicles and distance to the intersection.

Oncoming Traffic Notification: If the vehicle is in the left turn lane, the system will issue a warning of oncoming traffic based on information received from the other vehicles and vehicle location.

Cooperative ICC: If the vehicle using ICC approaches an intersection with a red light or a light that will soon turn red, the system will apply the brakes and bring the vehicle to a stop near the stop line.

These future systems are based on research and development conducted by Nissan as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) program over the past three years. These advanced systems utilize dedicated short range communication (DSRC) technology between road side equipment (RSE), on-board equipment (OBE) in the vehicle and other vehicles, and GPS-assisted high-accuracy vehicle positioning technology.

TMC to Participate in 15th World Congress on ITS

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it will host a corporate display booth and participate in an outdoor demonstration of ITS technologies at the 15th World Congress on ITS*1 (Intelligent Transport Systems) in New York, to be held from November 16 to 20, 2008.

Under the theme “Harmonious Mobility: People, Vehicles and Environment”, TMC will introduce its proposals for future sustainable mobility—with a special focus on traffic environment, safety and comfort—through videos, display panels and other exhibits, as well as through actual system application.  TMC’s “i-REAL” personal mobility concept vehicle, which TMC is eyeing to develop to a practical-use level in the near future, will feature as one such exhibit.

In the area of traffic environment, TMC will display information on, among other technologies, those that help drivers improve fuel efficiency and traffic flow.  In the area of safety, TMC will use videos and an all-new driving simulator to explain the state of development of its vehicle-infrastructure cooperative systems; it will also demonstrate vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle safe-driving support systems on a closed section of New York’s 11th Avenue as part of the U.S. Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) project.  In the area of comfort, TMC will use videos and panels to introduce advances in driver-support and information-provision technologies.

*1. Organized and operated by the New York Organizing Committee of the 15th Congress on ITS

The World Congress on ITS is the world’s largest and most influential ITS-related international conference.  Held annually in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and the Americas on a rotating schedule, the congress invites ITS-related groups (government, research bodies and commercial enterprises) from a wide range of countries and regions to use sessions, exhibitions and technical tours to present their latest ITS research findings and products.

TMC has long and actively promoted ITS, and has participated in and displayed its latest ITS technology at the World Congress on ITS every year since the first congress held in Paris in 1994.

Fiscal 2007 Clean-Energy and Low-Emission Vehicle Shipments

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (chairman: Mr Satoshi Aoki) is pleased to post here below the figures for Japanese automakers’ domestic shipments of clean-energy and low-emission vehicles for fiscal year 2007, ending March 31, 2008.

In an effort to counter global warming and improve air quality, automakers are working to develop and promote the diffusion of vehicles with reduced impact on the environment.

Against a backdrop of growing concern over the issue of automotive environmental performance, JAMA and its individual member manufacturers have been posting on their Web sites comprehensive, annually-updated statistics on clean-energy and low-emission ex-factory vehicle shipments every year since FY 2000.
