Salvos Switch To Hino Hybrid Trucks

Australia-An internationally renowned network of collection centres and retail stores is switching its 40-vehicle delivery truck fleet to Hino Hybrid 300 Series diesel-electric trucks.

Salvos Stores Southern Territory in five Australian States will switch to Hino Hybrid trucks as its current fleet of diesel trucks from various manufacturers needs to be replaced.

Salvos Stores is adopting hybrid technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions – creating wins for both the organisation and the environment.

The new Hino trucks also offer increased payload capacity compared to the existing fleet, meaning fewer trips for the same volume of goods transported.

The first five Hino Hybrids have been delivered to Salvos Stores Noble Park (Melbourne) warehouse.Salvos Stores’ General Manager, Finance and Operations, Frank Staebe said the new Hino Hybrid trucks would cut fuel use, emissions and costs.

“On average, Salvos Stores trucks travel approximately 600 kilometres each week, which equates to 2,500 kilometres per month and 30,000 kilometres a year,” he said.

“The new hybrid trucks use less fuel for urban and city driving, producing less emissions with a reduction in particulate matter. “They can also transport six pallets of goods, which our previous trucks’ configurations were not capable of doing.”

Mr Staebe said Salvos Stores was committed to sustainability, recycling and the environment.

“Our purchase of the Hino Hybrid trucks is just one step in creating a sustainable business that works with the environment, not against it,” he said.

“The new trucks will be used for general deliveries, pick-ups, home collections and any specific jobs that crop up from time to time. In the first instance, they will mainly be used for inner-city runs, where Hino’s Hybrid system suits stop-start operations.”

Salvos Stores operates 40 trucks and 209 stores across the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

Hino Hybrid 714 uses the power from a 100kW diesel engine and 36kW electric motor, according to driving conditions, to optimise fuel use and minimise emissions.
