Netherland- With extreme Enduro factory rider Xavi Galindo being sidelined due to his shoulder injury Husaberg’s biggest hopes on a top finish, which at Erzberg means actually finishing the Red Bull Hare Scramble on Sunday, were on Austrian rider Erich Brandauer aboard his FE 570, who finished 13th last year. He was joined by Dutch Rally rider Henk Knuiman (FE 390) who was invited by Husaberg Netherlands to try his luck agianst the Iron Giant. Knuiman did the Erzberg race two times before, but that was already some years ago, and the race is not really getting any easier.
The first day of the porlogue saw mixed fortunes for the two Husaberg riders. Erich delivered a solid run finishing in 36th, so a 1st row start on Sunday seemed secured. Henk on the other hand was lacking knowledge of the track which made him miss some sharp turns. The outcome was 133rd position which would have ment 3rd row on Sunday.
On Saturday, the second heat of the prologue turned the Husaberg rider’s fortunes around. Henk made a solid run without missing any turns and moved up to 71st position, which put him on the second row in the starting grid on Sunday. Due to the better weather conditions on Saturday (the rain finally stopped), not only Henk but basically all riders improved their times over Friday’s. Unfortunately Erich didn’t, because of a major riding mistake. Therefore he dropped down to 52nd position, missing the first row by 1,2 seconds. So both riders had to start from the second row, which is already quite a handicap in the battle for a Hare Scramble finish.
On Sunday at 12:00 sharp the first row of 50 riders took off to tackle the mostly tough and sometimes unrideable terrain of the Red Bull Hare Scramble. About one minute later the second row followed. Both Erich and Henk had a good start but Erich was taken down by a competitor already in the first climb and Henk had the same problem only shortly after. From there on the main problem for them was not tackling the difficulties of the track themselves, but having to stand in line and wait until the riders in front of them got dragged up one-by-one by the spectators and helpers. Although reaching the finish within the 4-hour time limit was already out of sight both riders didn’t give up and kept on riding, pushing and sweating.
In the end Erich made it up to checkpoint 17 and finished in 36th overall while Henk reached checkpoint 14 and 67th position out of 500 riders started.
Erich’s next shot at a top result in an Extreme Enduro race is alreday coming up. He will take on the Red Bull Romaniacs Rally starting on 26th of June, which he finished in 8th position in 2009.
